How to choose black masterbatch for automotive interiors: a low-odor buyer's guide
"Just send me black masterbatch" is the fastest way to get a grade that fails an odor test on the OEM line. Automotive interiors are judged by smell and gloss as much as by color. Here is how to specify a grade that passes.
1. Start with the carrier resin
The carrier (base polymer) should match the part's resin so the masterbatch blends cleanly:
- PP interiors (dashboards, trims) — PP carrier gives the best compatibility and lowest risk of weak weld lines.
- ABS / PC-ABS (handles, glossy trims) — match the carrier to ABS so dispersion and surface stay clean.
- Universal / PE carrier — only when the part resin is mixed or unspecified; it trades a little performance for flexibility.

2. Low-odor / low-VOC is now baseline, not premium
For enclosed cabins, odor and VOC are a pass/fail check, not a nice-to-have. Specify it explicitly:
- State the test method you will use (e.g., VDA 270 odor rating, or your OEM's internal method).
- Ask for a low-odor grade rather than assuming "black" meets it.
- Request the VOC/odor result on the lot certificate, not just a marketing claim.
3. Dispersion and no streaks
Automotive surfaces are inspected under light. Poor dispersion shows as streaks or specks. Look for:
- High carbon loading dispersed evenly (we run high-dispersion grades for interiors).
- A stated filter fineness / dispersion grade if the OEM asks for it.
- Consistent lots — same grade, same plant, same process, so batch 50 looks like batch 1.
4. Specify by part, not by "black"
A useful spec sheet names the part, the base resin, the target loading, and the checks:
- Part: e.g., door handle, PP, glossy black.
- Base resin / carrier: PP or ABS/PC-ABS.
- Loading: e.g., 30–50% carbon, matched to wall thickness and opacity need.
- Checks: odor grade, dispersion, color (L*a*b* if you have a target), MOQ, lead time.

5. Documentation the OEM will ask for

6. A simple spec template
When you request a quote, send: part name + base resin + target loading + odor/VOC method + target color (if any) + estimated annual volume. That is enough for a technical desk to propose a grade and a sample. The faster you give a real spec, the faster you get a grade that passes first time.
